Make Easter Sunday a Public Holiday
Last year, many retailers made applications to trade on Easter Sunday. The SDA, strongly aided by community support, successfully petitioned for tighter restrictions on Easter Sunday trading.
Now, we want to ensure that Easter Sunday is properly recognised as a significant community day by having it declared a public holiday.
The Issues
Though the success of our campaign in 2009 restricted stores opening on Easter Sunday, because that day is not a public holiday it remains possible for some employers to force staff to fund their Easter Sunday off from their other forms of paid leave (eg a day of annual leave).
Stores in tourist areas can now only be staffed by volunteers on Easter Sunday but those who do volunteer to work only receive ordinary Sunday rates. Making Easter Sunday a public holiday will see staff paid public holiday penalties as is appropriate on this significant community holiday.
Recognise Easter Sunday
Together, let us indicate to the Minister for Commerce, The Honorable John Robertson MLC, that Easter Sunday is a significant day for the people of NSW and that we want it to be recognised by being declared a public holiday.
All you need to do is fill in your details in the fields below. They will then be printed on a postcard design of your choice. If you wish, you may add an additional message to Minister Robertson as to why you would like Easter Sunday declared a public holiday. Together with all postcards submitted, your card will be presented to Minister Robertson.
